What are Waifu?

The dictionary definition of a waifu is as follows: “Waifu is a term for a fictional character, usually in anime or related media, that someone has great and sometimes romantic, affection for.” Additionally, characters who are considered waifu are almost exclusively female. Male characters who meet the definition of a waifu are usually referred to with separate terminology.

Some waifu are the objects of one or more main characters in their respective show/movie but this does not have to be the case in order for a character to be considered a waifu. These characters range in complexity and in-universe abilities from arm-candy that’s just sort of there to fully fleshed out characters with their own personalities, interests, goals, and motivations.

Some Examples:

Winry from FMA/FMA Brotherhood
Kagome from Inuyasha
Kaori from Your Lie in April
