Tourmalated Quartz

Last week, I went more into detail about self-care and some of the different forms it could take. One of the forms I talked about was crystals and how they could be used. I figure it’s best to start with the many crystals in my personal collection. I decided to start with my tourmalated quartz because I had already researched it and have a few ways that I use it already. Before we can talk about why this stone is so great for self-care, we need to understand what it is.

So what is it exactly? Tourmalated quartz, in my opinion at least, is a fascinating stone. It’s the result of black tourmaline forming inside of clear quartz either as flecks or needle-like inclusions. How cool is that? It’s like a Wonder Ball (wow, I’m old, haha). The yummy chocolate exterior is clear quartz, and the special surprise inside is black tourmaline!

Quartz is one of the most abundant and versatile minerals out there. It can be found basically anywhere in the world and has a wide variety of uses from jewelry to countertops to clock making, and yes– even to self-care! Tourmaline comes in a wide variety of colors, the most common of which is black. The main uses of tourmaline (in all of its colors) are in jewelry and in self-care.

Metaphysical properties and uses

To understand the metaphysical properties of tourmalated quartz, we should first look at the properties of the two crystals that combine to make it. Clear quartz is an incredibly useful stone with a myriad of uses. One of these uses is its ability to magnify different energies and absorb and release energy as needed to regulate it. This makes it ideal for meditation as you can use it to boost the natural energy of any other crystals you happen to be working with.

This makes it a great tool to focus your energy on as you meditate and practice mindfulness. Black tourmaline, on the other hand, is a powerful protective and grounding stone. It can help you feel more confident and secure by grounding out negative energies and welcoming positive energy. As a whole, tourmalated quartz combines these two stones’ energies; the two components keep each other in balance while bringing out the best in each other. These properties make it an even more powerful tool for rediscovering your center and getting you into a better headspace.

One way to do this is to use it while meditating. I like to do this by holding the stone in my hand and imagining any negative energies (like fear or anger) flowing out of me into the crystal. Then I imagine a gentle light radiating out from the stone, purifying the energy and flowing back into me. Other ways of using this powerfully protective stone are to wear it as jewelry or place it in certain areas in your home.

Wearing the stone is particularly beneficial because it keeps these welcome energies with you throughout your day. If placing it in the home, it is best to put it in the bedroom, living room, or near the front door. Placing tourmalated quartz in these areas will help regulate the energy in your main living areas and protect against any negative energy that may enter your home. As an added bonus, thanks to its black and white coloring, it can work with just about any type of décor.

Personally, I keep my tourmalated quartz point in my living room on the entertainment center. This location is doubly beneficial to me because, thanks to the layout of my little apartment, my front door opens straight into my living room! As always, it’s important to remember that self-care is a journey and what works for one person may not work for another. Every person is different and has different needs.

Even the needs of one specific person can change depending on the situation. You might find that tourmalated quartz, or crystals in general, aren’t your thing, and that’s ok! You know yourself better than anyone else, so take your time and find what works for you. Self-care is a journey, not a destination. Next week I’ll start getting into some aromatherapy stuff, then we’ll switch off every other week or so. So, until next week, take care of yourselves, friends.
